Bibliography of British and Irish History

The Royal Historical Society has been involved in the production of bibliographies of British and Irish history for a century, but the project to produce an electronic database began in the 1990s.  The database has been available online since 2002 and a printed version is no longer produced.

We include published material on British and Irish history from the Roman period onwards, and on relations with the empire and Commonwealth, including articles from electronic journals, regardless of place and date of publication - we aim at thorough coverage of publications from 1901 onwards.  For more information, see http://www.history.ac.uk/projects/bbih/info/scope.

The project is based at the Institute of Historical Research which is itself part of the School of Advanced Studies, University of London.  It includes data from two other projects, Irish History Online (based at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth) and London's Past Online (which was also based in the Institute of Historical Research).  Information about publications on Scottish history is provided by a separate team working under the auspices of the Scottish Historical Review Trust.

From 2002 to 2009 the Bibliography was published online free to the end user as the Royal Historical Society Bibliography, with funding from the United Kingdom Arts and Humanities Research Council.  During 2009 the Royal Historical Society and the Institute of Historical Research entered into a new partnership with Brepols Publishers in order to ensure the future development of the Bibliography.  Since 1 January 2010, the Bibliography has been published by Brepols as a subscription service.  Irish History Online, which was initially developed in conjunction with the Bibliography, has adopted a different publication model, although the Bibliography will continue to cover the main publications on Irish history and on British-Irish relations, and will still include all the data compiled by Irish History Online up to the end of 2009.
