The Danish Historical Bibliography emerged in the beginning of the 20th century as a retrospective, printed bibliography covering the period 1831-1912. Since then it has been supplemented until 1974, still in printed form. All these printed volumes are now digitized and made available online together with the current all-online version, which covers the period from 1990 onwards.
The Danish Historical Bibliography is the largest Danish subject bibliography. It includes Danish as well as foreign-language publications on Danish history from the Viking Age until present time. Monographs, collections, periodical articles, editions of sources, works of reference and bibliographies are registered, and the bibliography furthermore includes a large amount of local history and biographical writings.
The Danish Historical Bibliography makes use of a highly differentiated classification system created by bibliographers just under 100 years ago and has been gradually adapted to enable it to include new subjects, phenomena, and events that could not be taken into account at the time.
The Danish Historical Bibliography is naturally based at the Royal Library (The Danish National Library) because of the long term collaboration with the National Bibliography. The bibliography consists per 2009 of approx. 150,000 entries. It is enlarged by 2,500-3,000 entries annually.
